Overview

When you require assistance with commercial buildings such as office buildings or retail outlets, then consider engaging SIGA. To give you a complete picture of all of our capabilities, we have documented institutional projects including a new school building in this category.

Sydney West - Special Event

Special Considerations / Challenges

  • To ensure that when the lighting and PA systems were suspended from the trusses that these would be for the right load and on the right member.
  • Ensuring that the existing roof trusses and their members were not damaged by the event’s logistical requirements.
  • Ensuring that the truss was loaded in the correct manner so that it can support the loads easily.

The SIGA Solution

  • Specifying how the trusses can be loaded so that there is no concerns about the truss or its members providing support for the lighting and PA.

Fairfield - Market Awning Upgrade

Special Considerations / Challenges

  • Improving an older area of the markets.
  • Providing a new structure at the front which would replace the existing structure, with greater clearance.
  • Improvements to the entrance area to lift first impressions.
  • Staging the works, as for budget reasons not all could be done at once.
  • Blending structural, architectural, existing building constraints with stall layouts and other functional requirements such as heights.

The Siga Solution

  • Provision of documentation including working drawings, service layouts, and structural details.
  • Professional advice regarding associated items such as drainage.
  • Site inspections and certification of structural items.
  • Professional advice regarding unexpected site conditions.

Burwood - Pipe excavation

Special Considerations / Challenges

  • Ensure that the working environment for this project was safe for the workers to do their jobs.
  • Achieving this in a simple and cost-effective manner was the key.
  • Shoring of a 90 degree bend in a trench excavation.
  • Operating quickly to ensure the area was workable.
  • Adopting standard shoring practices / solutions – avoiding site specific designing / construction.
  • It’s all too easy to think that because you have done something similar before that you can go one step further away from safety.

The Siga Solution

  • Site discussions guiding managers as to necessary structural requirements of utilising standard shoring and limitations of machinery loads adjacent to excavations.
  • Where to limit personnel access.
  • Discussing what will and won’t work to ensure work can continue.
  • Confirming the structural adequacy of the method adopted.
  • Minimising the amount of engineering input required in this project was strangely the best option.
  • A wise call to get Siga’s assistance on this project.

Sydney - Bridge Maintenance

Special Considerations / Challenges

  • The initial objective was to provide a solution to get the necessary clamps into position.
  • Designing the concrete plinth to support the winch system lifting 2 x 6.5 (13 Ton) of clamps (equipment).
  • Working with all the necessary contractors.
  • Whilst time is always critical, this was the most crucial aspect of our service for this project.
  • Providing the best solution to keep the winches stable during the course of lifting 6.5 Ton clamps - which in some instances were 50m above the river bed.
  • Although our input in the end was relatively simple, getting to this point had a few hair-raising but rewarding moments.

The Siga Solution

  • Siga provided the necessary initial design input to facilitate the strategy for the lifting of the clamps.
  • Design and documentation of the concrete plinth.
  • Site inspections, professional advice and discussions.
  • And yes, the 13 Ton of clamps were successfully lifted into position 50m above the lower river bed.

Parramatta - Repairs to Concrete Degradation

Special Considerations / Challenges

  • Concrete cancer had affected the underside of the walkway to the weir and Siga was contracted to provide instructions on the rectification works.
  • Pedestrian traffic: as the walkway is heavily used by pedestrian traffic, pedestrian access of the walkway during the repairs needed to be considered.
  • Flooding: this weir is subject to flooding when it rains! Yes, whilst it hasn’t rained heavily in Sydney for some time there was some return of this rain early 2007. Of course, that’s when the repairs just happened to be scheduled.

The SIGA Solution

  • Determining suitable solutions and material with the builder to cater for the submerged environment that the repairs would be exposed to.
  • Inspections and discussions on site to consider the heritage listing constraints as well as the builder’s schedule and working conditions.
  • There were 7 different sections affected. Simplifying the specifications for the works for repairs was a necessity (some sections with 100% affected soffit, others as little as 20%).

Melbourne - 2006 Commonwealth Games - X Box Show Dome

Special Considerations / Challenges

  • Safety – as this structure was in a very public area it was critical to make sure that it would not adversely be affected by any winds – particularly up to 70km/hr. This had to work, it needed to be safe and fun – no room for ifs or buts.
  • Compliance – this structure needed to comply with the Building & Event Standards, as well as the local authorities, however, there were no Australian Standards governing such a structure.
  • Specifications – providing accurate specifications without standard guidelines.

The SIGA Solution

  • Asking the right questions of the right people – liaising with the architect and local authorities to determine what was required to substantiate the safety of the inflatable structure under specified wind load.
  • Peace of mind – liaising with the client to ensure the deadline was met.
  • Wind calculations - the wind forces were calculated using AS1170.2 – 2002 which is a standard for wind loads on structures or buildings and therefore the best available starting point.
  • On time – because of the restrictions on the time line, then nothing could be left to chance.

The Clients View
