Projects & Services - Residential projects

Over many years SIGA has had the privilege of being involved in providing engineering solutions for several interesting residential projects. For your benefit, a selection of residential case studies are available for review.

Lindfield - Residential Extension

Special Considerations / Challenges

  •  Most extensions are smaller than the existing residence. Therefore, working with what could be salvaged from the existing building was important in this project.
  • Blending the old with the new was also an obvious necessity.
  • Dealing with any old structure will always have surprises which have to be dealt with at the time. There is no substitute for the necessary close level of communication needed with the builder.

The Siga Solution

  • Providing structural design and documentation for the strip footings, floor slab, steel beams and timber floors.
  • Site inspections to certify footings, slabs and steel beams.
  • Site inspections to discuss any anomalies which needed sorting out along the way to providing the owners with a little more space.

Windsor

Residence on acreage, With over 180 foundation piers, Geoff didn't want to just bury concrete and money

Special Considerations /Challenges

  • Like most builders, Geoff wanted his house built perfectly. Of course with a house this big, any small detail could make a big difference in costs.
  • Therefore, it was worthwhile spending extra engineering time to make sure that the details were as cost-effective as possible.
  • Wind Loads: Location of the residence and the fact that the wind has a considerable run up from the river at the base of this property - and additionally it has a light-weight roof (metal sheeting).
  • Length of slab: the size of the actual slab being much larger than your typical residence.

The SIGA Solution

  • Providing the structural design and documentation for the floor slab & concrete piers, timber frame bracing and frame (wind) tie down details.
  • Site inspections to discuss the foundation options with Geoff and the Geotechnical Engineer.
  • Inspection and certification of the piers.

West Pennant Hills – Large Residence

The residence – Feb 2006.

Special Considerations / Challenges

  • Constructing a large and well built quality residence on a difficult site required not only an experienced structural engineer but builder as well so that the finished project was worth the effort.
  • Based on the prevailing conditions-knowing what to do, being flexible and making cost–effective decisions was very important.

The SIGA Solution

  • Providing accurate details to establish the design and to cover as many ‘unknown’ factors onsite as possible.
  • Providing onsite advice to enable the construction to be as seamless as possible and support where required for any additional information.
  • Design and documentation of raft slab piering and steel beam details.
  • Site inspections and certification of foundation piers, and steel reinforcement to raft

Hunters Hill – The Round House

Special Considerations /Challenges

  • Built over 4 levels
  • Swimming pool
  • Land falling away to the foreshore
  • Internal elevator
  • Circular living spaces
  • Combined concrete & masonry frame

The SIGA Solution

  • The structural engineering design teams of Siga and Astroc combined forces to work on the design challenges for this project
  • Offering workable alternatives not yet considered as structural solutions to architectural requirements
  • Conveying complex architectural designs to accurate technical documentation
  • Remaining flexible to the many design changes throughout the project

West Pennant Hills – Large Residence

Special Considerations / Challenges

  • Another quality home by Brewin Homes
  • An attractive well built residence located in the Hills district
  • Amongst many of its qualities is the front facade, which gives it quite a unique character, and is avoided by most other builders because of the complexity

The SIGA Solution

  • Design of stiffened raft slab foundation slab & piers
  • Documentation regarding building over sewer details
  • Details on retaining wall
  • Steel beams to support various floor wall & brickwork loads
  • Provided site inspections and certification for the foundation piers and steel reinforcement to the stiffened raft

Bexley – Extension & Renovation

Special Considerations /Challenges

  • Engaged by designer/builder Aven Constructions to assist in renovating and extending this private home in Bexley
  • Adding a double garage and workshop under the existing house
  • Addition and renovation of a family room and extra bedroom upstairs
  • Addition of a new front verandah, architectural columns and paintwork completed the transformation

The SIGA Solution

  • Design of a major underfloor support structure and a suspended floor slab
  • Assistance with many smaller and intricate aspects of this project such as the suspended slab and the layout of the beams to facilitate their installation

Horsley Park – House on Acreage

Special Considerations /Challenges

  • Additional design to large single level slab in order to comply with Australian Standards for crack control
  • Waffle pod foundation system
  • Site involved cutting and filling of land
  • Unique aesthetic appearance for this area

The SIGA Solution

  • Design and documentation of waffle raft slab and pier layout
  • Additional design to accommodate size of slab and added crack control to slab
  • Site inspections and certification of steel reinforcement to the slab
